Advantages of Using "Suica"
- Passengers can pass quickly through the automatic ticket gates simply by lightly touching "Suica" to the gate even with the pass in a holder.
- Even when a pass is used out of territory, additional charges are automatically calculated when passing through the automated ticket gate.
- When used as a "Suica iO Card" and the balance becomes low, it can be used repeatedly simply by adding more money to the card.
Overview of the System
JEIS developed the Suica Automated Ticketing System IC as an ID management system
using "Suica Commuter Pass" and "Suica iO Card" non-contact
IC cards for JR East. The system was introduced on a full scale in November 2001.
Suica data processed by station devices such as automated ticket gates and ticket
vending machines are collected via a station LAN on an ID management station server
installed in each station. The data then undergoes additional processing as necessary
on an ID management server via a WAN.
The main processing includes management of card IDs, notice of station devices
of the card IDs determined to the invalid, management of use histories, and so
on.
In the future, in order to promote the use of ticket-less and scan-less systems,
JR East is investigating multimodal, multi-function systems that go beyond simply
ticket substitution functions.
